Afsaneh Art & Culture Society is dedicated to promoting the expressive arts of the historic Silk Road regions of Central Asia. We endeavor to educate and promote understanding of diverse and enduring cultures, to support artists in their role as community visionaries, and to inspire people through the presentation of both traditional and new works.
Afsaneh Art & Culture Society a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization is dedicated to promoting the expressive arts of the historic Silk Road regions of Central Asia. We endeavor to educate and promote understanding of diverse and enduring cultures, to support artists in their role as community visionaries, and to inspire people through the presentation of both traditional and new works. Our organization serves as an important focal point for the dissemination of Central Asian culture and the participatory cultural arts of the San Francisco Bay Area Iranian- and Afghan-American communities. Now with global tensions at an all time high we are actively engaged in creating a positive profile and learning opportunities for the general public to represent our immigrant communities in the US. Founded in 1986 as a professional performance ensemble, Ballet Afsaneh Art & Culture Society, the organization assumed nonprofit 501(c)3 status in 1991. In 2005 the organization was renamed the Afsaneh Art & Culture Society in order to reflect an expanded vision. Our Board of Directors includes a mix of Central Asian and other community participants. Many prominent first generation immigrant artists now call the Bay Area home, our organization provides professionally produced performances, ongoing classes, publications and other projects that draw on the talents of these individuals. For young artists, eager to explore new avenues of expression, we offer unique support allowing for unfettered artistic exploration while drawing from the rich diversity of the Central Asian expressive arts traditions. Throughout the twenty-year evolution of AACS we have essentially maintained an artist-run, collaborative structure. Our active board members, staff and many of our community advisors are also artists themselves. We share a deep personal commitment in providing a positive profile for these important new California communities to the general public. AACS is engaged in the following programs and services: Ballet Afsaneh – Professional performance ensemble, dance music and poetry of the Silk Road. This critically acclaimed performance company has an international reputation for artistic excellence. Performance roster includes major museums, festivals, cultural events, educational institutions and concerts in theatrical venues. Alborz Farsi School – Farsi language, calligraphy, visual and performing arts for families. Weekly classes and full-time summer program in San Jose. Afsaneh Dance Academy – Traditional Central Asian dance classes for children and adults in several San Francisco Bay Area locations. Tajik Dance Initiative – International cultural exchange program in Tajikistan. Supports cultural research, lively-hood development for practitioners, and promotion of dance and the related arts. AACS also sponsors projects for the following organizations: Nejad World Music Center – Traditional Persian instrumental music education for children and adults, performance presentations. The Translation Project – Research in and presentation of contemporary Iranian literature to a worldwide audience in multiple languages and media. | |
