The mission of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Rutgers University is to create educational opportunities for Rutgers undergraduates in the study of the Middle East, including the study of Iran as a major component; to support and create new research opportunities for Rutgers faculty members and students; to bring cutting edge scholarship to the public; and to serve as a repository of knowledge accessible to scholars and the general public both in New Jersey and around the world.
At Rutgers University, Persian language is taught at all three levels, with the highest enrollments currently on the East coast. In addition, we regularly offer several courses on Iranian history, culture and politics. In 2006, in recognition of our strengths we became the first ever recipients of a Title VIa Department of Education grant specifically designated for the study of Iran (rather than the Middle East in general). By means of this grant we have been expanding our program in Iranian Studies, and also introducing Iranian content into general curriculum courses such as World Literature, World Cinema etc, and holding high-profile public conferences, and training university faculty and K-12 teachers in a better appreciation of Persian civilization, and building up our library resources in Iranian Studies which are available to the public in New Jersey. |
