CIJOH's founding mission is to record the contemporary history and culture of Iranian Jews for future generations of scholars and Iranian American Jews before this 2,700 year old culture gets lost.
The Center for Iranian Jewish Oral History (CIJOH) is a non-profit organization established in 1995 by Homa Sarshar. Based in LA and New York, CIJOH was established to collect an archive on the Jewish Iranian community for the use of future researchers in history, culture, and ethonography and various other fields of scholarship. To date, CIJOH has collected over 2,500 documents pertaining to the lives of Iranian Jews both inside and outside Iran. We have also conducted over 100 oral history interviews with leaders of Jewish Iranian community. These interviews were later fully transcribed to facilitate their use by scholars and researchers. Over the past 13 years, CIJOH hosted a number of conferences on the history and culture of Iranian Jewry, the proceeds of which were published in consecutive volumes of The History of Contemporary Iranian Jews. In 2007, CIJOH donated copies of its entire archive to UCLA, the Library of Congress, and Tel Aviv University to promote research and scholarship in the field. |
